698 Moscow Businesses Reduce Staff

 24.11.08
As of the fourteenth of November, 698 businesses in Moscow have filed government-required declarations stating that they would be enacting layoffs.
The Head of the Moscow Branch of the Federal Employment Office, Sergei Dudnikov, stated that the situation in the labor market is stable. The unemployment rate in Moscow is 0.3%, while there are 175 thousand vacancies available.
Company employees, strangely enough, do not support the position of Dudnikov. These are the employees most affected by the financial crisis. One of the top managers of a Moscow steel company who asked to remain anonymous told “Klerk.ru” Information Agency: "Our company is simply collapsing. Of nearly 500 employees, only 15 are still at work. There are, of course, vacancies. But, first, where will laid-off steel-industry specialists go if the entire industry is now falling apart? Secondly, potential employers now offer such low wages that no one wants to work for them."
