 09.05.09
The number of corruption-related crimes in Russia is growing, as is evident from Prosecutor General Yury Chaika's draft report circulated among the Federation Council legal and judicial affairs committee members on Thursday.
"There has been a trend toward rising susceptibility to corruption in all areas of legal relations and at all levels of government over the past ten years," says Chaika's report, which he is to present on Friday.
Over the past year, 28,451 corruption-related cases were forwarded to courts, which is 5.2% more than in 2007, the report says. Over 16,000 people were implicated in official crimes in 2008, which is nearly 13% more than in 2007. The number of recorded bribery cases grew in 62 regions of Russia.
"However, people of not very high legal and social status have been held liable for such crimes, although the deeds they commit mostly do not pose a great social threat," he said.
The characteristics of corruption in Russia is the high level of latency of corruption-related crimes and the presence of corrupt relations in the law enforcement bodies, Chaika said.
