President Dmitry Medvedev asked the State Duma to stop considering certain amendments to the law “On the Mass Media.” These amendments, passed in their first reading, widen the concept of “slander” and provide further grounds for shutting publications down. Many leading members of the mass media believe the legislation was proposed by legislators who are only seeking to protect their own images.
