Getting Tough On Tax Evasion?
 05.10.08 Law-enforcement authorities want tax crimes to be serious offenses, regardless of the amount of unpaid taxes in question.
According to the official position of Russia's police force, “courts treat tax evaders too humanely” and imprisonment is an exception, rather than a rule in prosecuting offenders. This is according to the Deputy Chief of Investigation Department of the Ministry of the Interior. The Deputy Chief continued that “recovery of damages is completely out of the question, since it is not even considered by courts.” Meanwhile, less than 5% of tax crimes go unsolved because tax evaders use “complex, covert schemes.”
