The government must give an example of rational use of resources and optimize federal programs and plans of state-run companies, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said at an economic conference on Friday.

"We must optimize federal programs and plans of state-run companies and infrastructural monopolies and invest in areas, which will have the maximum positive effect on the economy and social stability," he said.

"We cannot and will not review our social commitments, social security and retirement plans. We must strictly abide by our international commitments and ensure defense and security of Russia," the premier said.

"It is also necessary to implement large investment projects, which are vital for the development of the domestic economy in the post-crisis period," he said.

"We must re-estimate our resources in other areas and optimize our expenditures," he said. "Nearly every private company is correcting its expenditures, evaluating investments critical for the future development and for preservation of the market status, and getting rid of inefficient projects. The government must not simply follow this logic but also give an example of correct and rational use of resources."
