Medvedev Signs Law Easing Citizenship Procedure For Compatriots

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev signed the federal law introducing several amendments in Article 14 of the federal law on Russian citizenship, the presidential press service said on Thursday.
The State Duma approved the law on September 12, 2008, and the Federation Council approved it on September 19.
The federal law stipulates that foreign citizens and people without citizenship, but registered at the place of residence in a federal constituent territory, which they selected for permanent residence, can pass the simplified citizenship procedure (without observing the conditions of a five-year continuous period of residence on the territory of the Russian Federation, a legal income and the knowledge of the Russian language). They can become Russian citizens under the state program on promoting the voluntary resettlement of compatriots in the Russian Federation.
