The State Duma Committee on Labor and Social Policy approved a bill in the first reading to increase the minimum wage to 4330 rubles/month. The change would take affect Jan. 1, 2009.

Lawmakers predict that the bill will be passed in the spring session. This would give individuals and employers time to adjust to an almost two-fold increase in the minimum wage. The committee believes that increasing the minimum wage will lead to the further growth of the average salary for the country as a whole.
