Most Popular Internet Publications May Be Required To Register As Mass Media

18.02.08 Amendments to the law will assign the status of mass media to all Internet publications which receive over 1000 visits a day.
The Federation Council is preparing amendments to the law “On Mass Media” regulating activity of Internet publications in the RF.
“I think one of the key amendments must be a regulation on mandatory registration for Internet sites with an audience of no less than 1000 visits a day. It corresponds with Article 12 of the law “On Mass Media” which require mandatory registration for printed mass media publications with 1000 or more copies published,” – explained one of the initiators for the amendments, Vladimir Slutsker, on Monday to Interfax.
According to him, “mass media status may also be obtained voluntarily by other internet publications with less then 1000 visits a day.”
Initiators of the amendments believe that official registration will force Internet publications “to play by civilized rules.”
