Over Half Of Russian Middle Class Claims To Be Immune From Crisis - VTsIOM

 09.05.09
More than half of the Russian middle class claim they are immune from the world crisis, Russian Public Opinion Study Center (VTsIOM) Director Valery Fyodorov said.
"Fifty-three percent said they had been totally immune from the crisis and their employers were doing everything to keep things running," he said.
Twenty-eight percent said they "could find an equal job in case of dismissal, and thirty percent said they would find a job with certain difficulties," Fyodorov said.
Only twelve percent fear they may be unable to find a new job, he said.
"On the whole, Russians are active, and sixty-eight percent of them are ready to tackle the crisis unaided," Fyodorov said.
Some 20-25% of Russian citizens may belong to the middle class, such as employees of large companies, bureaucrats, intellectuals and representatives of small and medium businesses, Energy and Finance Institute President Leonid Grigoryev said.
"The middle class should have maximum opportunities for social, political and economic activity. The post-crisis situation in Russia will depend on preservation of the middle class in the innovative and intellectual spheres," Grigoryev said.
