Russia Becomes The World Leader For Spam And “Innovative” Malicious Software

15.02.09 According to Kaspersky Lab’s annual report on the development of computer threats in 2008, last year’s principle trends were the development of virus technologies, the formation of a criminal virus ecosystem and the growth of online threats. Russia has surpassed all other countries in its spam generation and in the sophistication of its malicious software.
As noted by Kaspersky Lab, a long era of global epidemics ended in 2008: “2007-2008 saw a rapid increase in information harvesting Trojan programs, mostly aimed at stealing bank accounts and online gaming information.” They assert that a complex and powerful virus ecosystem has been created with a division of labor that consists of cyber-criminal customers and providers.
Last year, China became the world leader in the creation of viruses. But first-place for complexity and innovativeness of the programs goes to Russian hackers and virus writers. According to the report, there was an insignificant increase in the world volume of spam in the past year – only 2.1% compared to year before. However, Russia has become the leader in the quantity of spam delivered. 22% of spam was generated from Russian sources, compared to 16% in the USA. The report also indicated that, in 2008, the frequency of virus infection in social networks now exceeds email infection considerably.
The number of cyber-criminals is expected to increase in 2009. The main reason for this increase is the global economic crisis. As stated in the report, “reduction of jobs and the closing of IT-projects will leave many highly-skilled programmers either without work or without money due to pay cuts. Some of these people will become involved in the cyber-crime business and other such ways of earning money.”
