Russia May Remove Work Restrictions For Foreign Students

08.02.09 A group of delegates from the parties United Russia and The Liberal Democratic Party has submitted to the State Duma a bill that would remove work restrictions for foreign students during their study in Russian universities. The corresponding amendments are offered in Article 13 of the law "On the Legal Status of Foreign Citizens in the Russian Federation."
One of the amendments’ authors explained that, currently, foreign students have limited rights and cannot work during their study. The delegate stated that they can work only as support personnel in universities – for example, as laboratory assistants. Delegates have taken into account the need to balance the rights of Russian and foreign students.
If the bill is accepted, foreign students may work in service spheres. For example, they would be able to work in places where students are usually employed, such as in fast food and car maintenance centers. The bill would bring Russia into line with common practice in most other countries.
