Russian Audit Chief Tells Oligarchs To Sell Football Clubs, Not Beg State Aid

 03.04.09
The chairman of Russia's Audit Chamber, Sergey Stepashin, has advised Russian oligarchs to sell their planes, villas and football clubs to settle their accounts rather than asking the state for help. Stepashin was speaking in the State Duma on 27 March; his comments were reported by corporate-owned Russian business channel RBK TV on the same day.
The correspondent noted that Russia's oligarchs were "queuing up to get state help". Stepashin was then shown saying: "Well, have a think about how to settle accounts. Sell your dachas, planes, villas, your billions, the Chelsea (football) club. Settle your accounts!"
During the report, Stepashin was also shown criticizing the government's list of key enterprises eligible for state support; first, due to lack of clarity as to how the list was compiled, and second, because simply being on the list does not guarantee the receipt of state support.
