Students Register "One Day" Companies

 21.07.08
Students are registering fly-by-night companies. Moscow tax inspectors disclosed a list of twelve of Moscow’s higher institutions whose students’ names have been used to register such companies. Sometimes a student’s passport data appears in the documentation of many of the "one-day" companies, which are often used in tax evasion schemes.
Both local and foreign students have fallen victim. When offered money, students are willing to give up their passport information to the criminals, who use the information to register these illegal businesses.
Students often do not know that the companies registered under their names will be used for criminal purposes. Some of the students’ names are immediately used to register several companies. It is practically impossible to hold the students accountable. By law, the students can only be punished if it is proven that they themselves actually founded these businesses. Maksim Yakovlev, the lead lawyer of the legal agency Irsan, says the students are more victims than accomplices.
The impunity of the student community is therefore useful in the criminal schemes.
Among the universities listed are Moscow State University, Moscow Technical University of Telecommunications and Informatics, the Bauman Moscow State Technical University, the Plekhanov Russian Academy of Economics, and others.
